What began as a solve for workwear needs has since become an iconic garment recognized and worn the world over.

From miners to models, Quartzy recently highlighted the American blue jean as a true study in class aspiration, a story that cannot be told without referencing the company that invented the garment – Levi Strauss & Co.

On May 20, 1873, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis were awarded a patent for riveted work pants. Using denim, the partners began manufacturing the world’s first blue jeans—the “blueprint” for all jeans today. Originally called waist overalls, this humble denim invention, renamed Lot 501® in 1890, revolutionized fashion.

Today, as Quartzy call out, there are blue jeans to suit any taste and wallet, from the frugal thrift store shopper to the luxury-end buyer – and Levi’s® jeans are among the most coveted of all brands.

“I know Levi’s® fans who are still wearing their favorite 501® jeans after 50 years. Jeans haven’t put a dent on that fan’s wallet in decades,” LS&Co. Historian Tracey Panek said. “On the opposite side of the spectrum are discerning style trend-setters seeking coveted brands or collectors hunting down artisan-like jeans such as those crafted with natural indigo dye on vintage looms using expensive sundries.”

In fact, one of the remarkable qualities of blue jeans are its versatility. Tracey added, “It’s amazing to have such a variety of choices nowadays all stemming from a single classic garment.”
